The interview
Can you introduce yourself and describe your medical background?
My name is Carlos Ballesteros. I live in a little town in North Florida. I have been working as a dairy manager for the last 15 years. I am a veterinarian from Colombia. I have this diagnosis about the polycystic kidney disease about 20 years ago, and I have been working with some specialists since maybe 15, 16 years ago.
How had your condition progressed before finding Dr. Bismah?
The last two years, my kidney function get worse, very bad. I had to stop working there because my health condition. My health condition get very, very, very bad, so I wasn't able to do my responsibilities over there in the farm. Because I wasn't feeling too good, and actually I was thinking that maybe it was my last day in this part of eternity.
What symptoms were you experiencing at your lowest point?
In that time, I wasn't able to work my regular schedule, my regular hours. I was very tired, very fatigue. My blood pressure was very high. I was very weak, but I wasn't able to just walk, only walk. I need to stop and rest, like two, three times to get there. I wasn't able to sleep. I wasn't able to rest. Pain in my low back was terrible.
What was your experience with previous specialists?
I had like four or five different ones, they had the same protocol. But my condition was getting worse, worse, worse, worse. They prescribe all the time the same things, medicine for the cholesterol, medicine for the blood pressure, and some supplements because my condition generate a lot of anemia. I went with my wife over there, but was a very dark, very dark appointment, was never hope. Everything was negative.
How did you first react to the treatment at Kidney Institute?
We had the first appointment with her, and was amazing. It was amazing because the viewpoint from her to do the diagnosis, to do the treatment was something new for us. I never hear that about my specialists. This is my first time in my life that I feel what is the real medicine. It was a big change in my mind, my heart, my everything.
What were the results of the treatment and how long did they take?
Everything was natural supplements. So I start taking that, and let's see, like three weeks, four weeks after that, I start feeling better. My fatigue and my weakness was disappearing little by little. I started sleeping better. Something that was amazing for me was I start some therapies over there and I walk for two hours and forty minutes, and I feel so good.
What is your overall impression of Dr. Bismah and the Kidney Institute?
The plans that she offered for us about the diagnosis, about the treatment, about the therapies and everything, it was integral program and was very interesting for me. I see the results in me. I don't think there is any another place to go. That is a beautiful place, beautiful people. The knowledge that she has, the experience that she have, it's a gift from the Lord to her to help us.
