The interview
What was your experience with earning potential and professional growth at Vector?
I started with Vector and Cutco at eighteen or nineteen years old. I decided that experience was more important than compensation, but the compensation is still great. For young people building a resume, it's about creating opportunities and doors. Once you stick with it for more than a couple of weeks, the compensation is more than what you would get at probably most jobs.
How do you respond to claims that the company is a pyramid scheme or a scam?
Pyramid schemes are when people have to buy into the company and there are usually startup costs. Here, there are no startup costs and people don't have to pay. We have a guaranteed base pay, and those things just aren't common in pyramid schemes or scams.
Can you explain how the pay structure actually works?
There's a guaranteed base pay for each qualified appointment that a representative completes. Qualified meaning someone's over the age of thirty and that they have a full-time job. That's guaranteed steady, consistent income. They can earn more than that when the product is sold, which is more often than not, but they're never earning less than that guaranteed base.
Do representatives have to sell to their friends and family?
I and a lot of my friends that worked with Vector and Cutco never sold to my family. When I was new, I was more showing people who could just get me referrals and other opportunities to meet people that I didn't know. That's how I built everything that I ever had with Vector and Cutco.
Why does Vector Marketing specifically recruit college students?
We focus on college students because they can do appointments after 5 PM around their classes. Middle-class families who love Cutco might not see it without younger people who have flexible, fluid schedules. It makes it low pressure and more fun for the customer, allowing us to reach a wider base.
Why do you think the company has a negative reputation in some online circles?
There's always a factor of someone doing something that's not above board in every company, but that doesn't mean the whole company is bad. Just like a Yelp review, it only takes one negative person to ruin it for others. Because anyone can go online and say what they want, those opinions factor into the reputation we see.
