The interview
What is your advice to someone considering joining Vector Marketing?
I would just say my advice would be to try it out for yourself. Also, ask someone who actually works with the company because I think that's the most credible source that you could get it from.
How do you respond to claims that Vector is a scam or pyramid scheme?
I would respond with asking them, 'Do you know what the structure of any of those things are?' Our reps don't have to pay anything to get started with us. We give them Cutco to use for free. Also, our reps only make money off of their sales and their demos; they don't make money off of anyone else that they're working for or working with, so it's not multi-level in that sense.
Is the pay structure at Vector Marketing confusing or misleading?
It is different from a lot of other companies, but when you look at it laid out on paper or when I explain it, it's actually pretty straightforward. I like to say that our representatives always have a floor to stand on because they have the base for every appointment, but there's no ceiling on their income. They get rewarded for working harder and making more sales, but they're paid regardless of if there is a sale made.
Why are new representatives encouraged to start with their own network of friends and family?
It's kind of a privilege to get started with people that you're comfortable with first because most reps who start with us have no prior sales experience. They might not have as much confidence in themselves and their skills. We allow them to get started with people that they know because it's a lot more confident boosting for them. Their confidence goes up when they're comfortable and their nerves go down.
Why does Vector Marketing specifically recruit so many young people and students?
Because they're going after big goals. They're younger, so they don't have as much experience, so they're open to learning. The generation that I grew up in, there was a bit of a communication skill gap just because of how COVID happened and social media. There's a lot of students trying to get into the workforce who might not have those soft skills that are really valuable in their careers and everyday life.
What has been your personal experience after three years with the company?
I've worked here for three years now, and I'm a completely different person than who I was when I started in a whole variety of different ways. This job isn't for everyone, but it's a really unique opportunity because of the fact that there's no ceiling on your income. If you're a hard worker, you're disciplined, and you want to become the best version of yourself, I would say that Vector is the perfect place to do that.
Frequently asked
Is Vector Marketing a scam or a pyramid scheme?
Ava McDougall clarifies that Vector is not a pyramid scheme because representatives only earn money from their own sales and demos, not from others they work with. She also notes that pyramid schemes are illegal in Canada and that Vector has been a legitimate company for over 35 years.
Do I have to pay money to start working at Vector Marketing?
According to Ava McDougall, representatives do not have to pay anything to get started. The company provides free training and gives representatives Cutco cutlery to use and borrow for free while they are sales reps.
Why does Vector Marketing require you to start with friends and family?
Ava explains that starting with a personal network is a 'confidence booster' for new reps who lack prior sales experience. It allows them to practice in a comfortable environment, which helps their nerves go down as their skills improve.
