The interview

Can you tell us about your background and your practice?

I'm Sarah Symmes, a registered physiotherapist based in Toronto with a focus on orthopedics and pelvic health. I offer both in-clinic and mobile services across the lifespan, from prenatal and postpartum care to pediatric pelvic health and supporting women through perimenopause and menopause.

What was your biggest barrier or limitation early in your business?

The biggest barrier was probably myself. I was downplaying my value as a business owner. Early on, I was a completely mobile business relying on word-of-mouth to keep the business small because I didn't have the capacity for more patients. I had a pattern of overworking without systems in place, which led toward burnout.

What strategic changes did you make during your time with CBL?

I shifted from seeing myself as a solo practitioner to taking my role as a business owner seriously. I realized that underlying my individualized care, I had a unique methodology. I developed my 'centered physiotherapy' approach, which helped me communicate more clearly to clients, and I revamped my website to align with that vision.

What is your favorite part about your practice?

My main thing is connection. It's connecting with my clients, really getting to know them, learning about their goals and needs, and then really being their cheerleader through the process of their care.

How does your business feel now compared to before?

It feels more stable and aligned with my vision. There is more spaciousness in my schedule and in my decision-making. This allows me to be more present with client care while also making time for the business side.

What kind of feedback have you received from your clients recently?

A client recently told me, 'I always feel so much better after talking to you.' That stuck with me because I want them to feel physical relief, but also a sense of hopefulness, feeling understood, and feeling empowered.

What should potential clients know about working with Centered Physiotherapy?

I care deeply about how you feel. The reason for the name 'Centered Physiotherapy' is about putting the patient at the center, but also ensuring I am centered and present as a therapist so you are supported and clear on your next steps.

Frequently asked

How can a clinician overcome the limitation of being a solo practitioner?

Sarah Symmes found that the biggest barrier was downplaying her value as a business owner. Through CBL, she shifted her identity from just a practitioner to a strategic owner, allowing her to implement systems that moved her beyond the limitations of a small, word-of-mouth mobile business.

What are the signs of burnout for mobile healthcare providers?

Sarah described a pattern of overworking without underlying systems in place, which led her toward burnout. She addressed this by becoming more visible in her business and creating a structured clinic-based environment that allowed for more 'spaciousness' in her decision-making.

How does business coaching help with patient care quality?

Sarah Symmes noted that by taking the business side seriously, she became more 'centered' and present during sessions. Developing a clear methodology helped her communicate more effectively with clients, ensuring they felt empowered and understood rather than just physically relieved.

Full transcript

Speaker 0: Hi. I'm Sarah Sims. I'm a registered physiotherapist with a focus on orthopedics and pelvic health physiotherapy. I'm based in Toronto, and I offer both in clinic and mobile physiotherapy services. And across all those areas, my focus is really helping people feel confident in their bodies, just through all stages of life. So I look at it as, you know, whether you're recovering from an injury or a client moving through the phases of prenatal and postpartum care or then supporting those families afterwards with their own children's pelvic health concerns, and then working with those families as they age. So working with women through the the perimenopause and menopause phases of life as well. So it's physiotherapy across the lifespan. Speaker 1: Yes. Speaker 0: Okay. So I would say earlier on, it was really the biggest barrier was probably myself. I've always been really passionate about my clinical care, and I always took my patient care really seriously, but, really, I was, kind of downplaying my value as a business owner. So in early in my business, I was a completely mobile business, so I really just, relied on word-of-mouth referrals and to kinda try to keep my business small because I didn't have a lot of capacity to see a lot more patients. And then as through my time in CBL and through my time of shifting from mobile into a more clinic based environment, then I started to, need to get more systems in place, become more visible in my business. And, and sometimes I had a bit of a pattern of, really overworking, without those, underlying systems in place. I, you know, was tending towards a little bit of burnout. So I'd say that was my biggest limitation. Okay. Okay. So I'd say, actually, in my time with CBL, I really shifted from seeing myself as a solo practitioner and just, like, a really small practice, and I started to take my business more seriously as a business owner. That was something that I really wanted to be intentional about. I'd always really taken the patient care side seriously, but I hadn't really stepped into that role of a business owner. Mhmm. So I'd say that strategic change would probably be I always really prided myself on giving very individualized care to my patients. But through CBL, it helped me realize that underlying that individualized care, I really did have kind of a method or my own unique methodology. So really taking time to develop what my centered physiotherapy approach and methodology was kind of really helped me communicate that more clearly to my clients. And then I also had a lot of fun revamping my website, to help that be in line with that methodology, and vision for my business. One thing. I'd say my main thing is connection. So, that's my favorite part about my practice. It's connecting with my clients, really getting to know them, learning about their goals and needs, and then really being their cheerleader through the process of their care. I'd say it just feels more stable and aligned, aligned with my vision, and I'd say a clearer vision of where my practice is going. There's more spaciousness in my schedule and in my decision making. So I feel like that allows me to be more present with my client care, but also I'm making more time for the business side as well. Speaker 1: So Speaker 0: do I have to say it just like that? Okay. Okay. Because where this this particular question really made me think about a compliment that a client just gave me last week that was, like, just was really touching. So I'd love to kinda share about that if that's okay. So yeah. Okay. So sorry. I just wanna pause because I feel like maybe you could reask the question because it just doesn't feel like it's flowing like a natural question. Speaker 1: I feel like yeah. Okay. Okay. Speaker 0: Sure. So one a compliment that I just recently received with the client, I think this really expresses the value, that clients can share about working with me in my practice. So, and it was just so touching. So last week, I bumped into a client. I was asking her how she was doing. And at the end, she just said, I always feel so much better after talking to you. And so that just really stuck with me because that's exactly what I hope for from all my clients is just after listening and we talk things through and creating a plan for their care, that I want them to not only feel the physical relief that you can get from physiotherapy, but just to feel that sense of hopefulness, feeling understood, and just feeling empowered and just feeling feeling better. So that's really what I strive for all my clients to feel. Speaker 1: Oh, it's like the best feeling. Yes. Yeah. Exactly. Yes. Yeah. It felt so good. Speaker 0: Okay. So if you're considering working with my practice with me at Centered Physiotherapy, I just want you to know how much I care deeply about how you feel, and the the feeling behind centered physiotherapy. The reason it came about was really putting both, the the patient at the center, but also me as a therapist making ensuring that I am centered coming into our sessions together so that you really get a real present version of me, and I'm there to really listen to all the physical sides of things, but also how that's affecting the rest of your life. And that, yeah, I just really want my clients to know that they'll be supported and clear on their next steps and to feel more confident in their body. Speaker 1: Okay. Speaker 0: Okay. Okay. I feel like I'm look because I have you down to the left. So when I look at it, I'm like, oh, I'm gonna be, like, weird eyes the whole time. But Speaker 1: okay. It was okay? Alright. Speaker 0: Okay. Yes. If will there be anything shared with me to see what is being shared? Speaker 1: Does that make sense? Or okay. Okay. Yeah. That would be great just to make sure I feel good about it. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. Because sometimes you get up here, you feel like it's just verbal. Like, I don't know actually how it all sounded. Mhmm. Okay. Sorry. I'm making my screen bigger so I can see it as well.
