The interview
What symptoms were you experiencing before seeking help?
I was experiencing a lot of fatigue, inflammation symptoms, and body pain. I was really getting nowhere with the doctors, so I thought I would try a different approach, and functional medicine sounded like the next best option.
What treatments had you tried in the past that did not work?
I have an autoimmune thyroid condition, Hashimoto's thyroiditis. I've worked with an endocrinologist and tried the thyroid medication that's generally prescribed, but I was not finding any relief. I also tried supplementation of B12, oil tablets, and different vitamins on my own.
Why did you choose to consult with Dr. Ian?
I found him on social media and watched him several times before reaching out. He is very knowledgeable, and it's apparent when you watch him. He has a different approach to traditional medicine by testing for different markers in your blood work and actually listening to symptoms.
What was the most surprising thing you learned during the process?
The biggest surprise was figuring out how important gut health is to the rest of our bodies and what's triggering our autoimmune conditions, such as leaky gut. I was not aware that we really need to take care of that before we can get on top of anything else.
How quickly did you notice a change in your health?
I noticed a change pretty immediate with the diet recommended by the dietician. Doing the elimination diet was eye-opening as far as how food makes me feel, so I felt different right away. It did take several months to notice weight loss, which wasn't my primary goal but was a great addition.
What new insights or diagnoses have you received recently?
Recently, in the past couple of months, he diagnosed me with pernicious anemia and started me on B12 supplements. I'm starting to notice an upswing in my activity level and energy. This hadn't been diagnosed by any other doctor.
How would you describe the communication with the practice?
He seems to be very connected with the patients, answers questions, and is available to consult with the secure messaging, so that's been great as well.
Frequently asked
Will functional medicine work if traditional thyroid medication failed?
Laura Moreno found that while traditional thyroid medication and standard endocrinology provided no relief for her Hashimoto's, Dr. Ian's approach of testing different blood markers and addressing gut health led to progress.
How does Dr. Autoimmune identify undiagnosed conditions?
Laura noted that Dr. Ian listens closely to symptoms and looks for underlying triggers like leaky gut; he was able to diagnose her with pernicious anemia, a condition her previous doctors had completely missed.
How long does it take to see results with Dr. Autoimmune?
Laura felt a difference 'right away' after starting the recommended elimination diet, though she noted that significant milestones like weight loss took several months of consistency.
